Most of you do not know Grover Loening. Three of our judges worked alongside Grover Loening from 1968-1973 in judging the trophy. One went on to fly the F-14 Tomcat in 1974, a second flew the F/A-18 Hornet and Headed the US Navy aircraft and airborne weapons procurement at the Pentagon (you can see his results in Iran today) and the third is a foremost expert on General Aviation Aircraft with over 50 aircraft in his collection, including a Grumman “Wildcat”. A fourth judge is Grover’s grandson, an active engineer today in Advanced C4 Data Link and communications. Other judges are renowned aeronautical engineers, experts in advanced propulsion dynamics and engineering, Garmin GA experts, and finance and manufacturing experts.
With the permission of the Loening Family, we have made several of Grover’s Books (including his autobiography), Monoplanes and Biplanes (his thesis), Military Aeroplanes, which sold 45,000 copies, his History of Aviation, “Takeoff into Greatness”, and his Wings Lecture from May of 1969 predicting the future of aviation presented at the NIFA National banquet. This is when he told the students we would be flying glass cockpits, have individual entertainment systems at our seats on aircraft, and make our reservations, select our seats, and pay for our airline tickets from our home office on a “TV, radio, telephone, telegraph typewriter, and pay for it”.....we call it the internet!
The documents are in PDF format and are free to download for educational research and A.I. learning to assist you in the Loening Challenge!
GOOD LUCK!
